Thomas DeAngelo has spent years rebuilding his life after his separation from Angela and the devastating belief that she died. When she reaches out to him from Brazil, he finds himself facing emotions he thought he had buried for good. His response is not simply one of happiness or relief; it is a complicated mixture of disbelief, resentment, concern, and responsibility.

Thomas no longer sees Angela as the romantic partner she once was, yet he is willing to risk his safety to help her, partly because she is the mother of his three daughters. His choices reveal a sense of duty that survives disappointment. Meanwhile, his developing relationship with Sofia introduces the possibility of a different future, one not entirely defined by his earlier experiences.

Through these relationships, the novel explores how people can remain connected even after love has changed, and how moving forward sometimes requires acknowledging rather than erasing the past.

Thomas’s journey forces him to distinguish between the obligations he feels toward someone from his past and the life he might build for himself in the future.
