Interview with author Joel McKay

Q1 Could you please start by introducing yourself to our readers?

A1. I’m Joel McKay, an author by night and city manager by day who lives in Prince George, British Columbia. I have two daughters, a Maine Coon named Daphne, three books to my name and a host of short stories. I typically write horror and dark fantasy.

Q2 What would you say is your strength as an author?

A2. Pace and dialogue. Many reviewers have picked up on the speed at which I keep a story moving, which is purposeful as I’m always trying to write within the style and structure of old school pulp yarns. Dialogue comes naturally to me after years as a journalist – do enough interviews and you become an expert in the way people talk and the back-and-forth of interesting conversation.

Q3 What is your favorite part from your book ‘It Came From the Trees and Other Violent Aberrations’?

A3. My favourite story in the anthology is “The Warrior’s Task” – it’s different than the rest in that it’s a grimdark fantasy and it’s a morally driven story about honour, sacrifice and how even brief relationships can be as deep and meaningful as long ones.

Q4 How do you handle literary criticism?

A4. I laugh.

Q5 What do you like about audiobooks?

A5. It’s a different medium in which to enjoy literature. I enjoy the pace, the cadence, the tone of voice. I particularly love listening to Michael Kramer narrate Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. He has an incredible style and voice.

Q6 How has the experience of writing and publishing a book influenced your perception of yourself?

A6. I don’t think it has. I’ve always written, I’ve been published more times than I can count. It’s just what I do so it doesn’t really affect me in any measurable way.

Q7 What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

A7. Clarity, voice, structure, and conflict.

Q8 What is your work schedule like when you are writing?

A8. I try to be as disciplined as possible and treat it like a job. My mantra is “two sentences a day” – just to keep me at it, it often ends up being a lot more than that.

Q9 What is the significance of the title ‘It Came From the Trees and Other Violent Aberrations’?

A9. It Came From the Trees is the title of the novelette featured in the anthology, the other half of the title describes the dread and unusual nature of each of the remaining stories that form the collection.

Q10 What did you want to be when you grew up?

A10. A novelist. Here we are!

Wreaking Vengeance

Book: Wreaking Vengeance

Author: Lynn-Steven Johanson

What surprised me most about Wreaking Vengeance was how invested I became in the characters. While the novel begins with a brutal homicide investigation, the story spends considerable time showing the personal lives of those involved. Detective Joe Erickson isn’t simply chasing a killer, he’s also supporting his wife Destiny as she deals with the emotional impact of her mother’s cancer diagnosis.

These quieter moments provide balance to the darker elements of the story. The scene where Joe cooks Lemon Garlic Parmesan Shrimp for dinner and comforts Destiny after her difficult day stood out because it revealed his compassion and humanity. It is these moments that transformed him from a detective into a fully realized character.

The victim, Jennifer Logan, is also developed with surprising depth despite being deceased. Through interviews with her attorney, sister, and acquaintances, readers gradually learn about her passion for Affenpinschers, her difficult marriage, her wealth, and her complicated personal relationships. Each revelation adds another layer to her story.

This novel succeeds because it remembers that crimes affect real people. The emotional connections between characters are what stayed with me after I finished reading.

The story follows Patchwork, a courageous young protagonist navigating a surreal world filled with living dolls, enchanted forests, mysterious magic, and unsettling creatures. Ainihi’s world-building is one of the novel’s greatest strengths, blending whimsy and wonder with darker themes of identity, memory, and transformation. A Love Story Between 2 Worlds

.

It is a deeply personal memoir that explores love, loss, faith, and the enduring connection between two souls. This book is a spiritual journey that encourages readers to trust in God’s presence and believe that love can transcend the boundaries of the physical world.

The story begins during Charlie Lord’s college years at Washburn University, where he pursued his passion for baseball and met Peggy Chamberlain, a beautiful and spirited cheerleader who captured his heart. Through vivid storytelling and nostalgic photographs from the late 1970s, Charlie brings Peggy to life, allowing readers to experience her warmth, kindness, and remarkable spiritual nature.

What impressed me is the exploration of the author’s lifelong connection with Peggy beyond the physical realm. After losing contact with her in the earthly world, Charlie spends decades unaware of her fate. Forty years later, he discovers the heartbreaking truth about what happened to her. Yet, according to the author, Peggy’s presence never truly left him. Through telepathic experiences and spiritual encounters, she remains an active part of his life, guiding and comforting him from another dimension.

A Love Story Between 2 Worlds is an uplifting and thought-provoking read that invites readers to consider the mysteries of existence and the power of love that extends beyond earthly limitations.

Figures such as Field-Marshall Cassiopeia Thrumbo, the ambitious Cebrenia Caroli, and the formidable Dei Glorium are portrayed with depth and conflicting motivations. Nagler’s Secret

𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸: Nagler’s Secret 📚
𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿: Michael Stephen Daigle ✍️
.
.

Nagler’s Secret masterfully combines investigative journalism, police procedural elements, and psychological drama into a narrative that feels intimate. Jimmy Dawson’s attempt to uncover the truth behind the Bastion Street case becomes more than an investigation, it becomes an obsession shaped by guilt, memory, and distrust.

I loved the rich cast of characters in this book. Frank Nagler is portrayed not as a flawless hero, but as a deeply burdened detective carrying secrets that have shaped his entire life. Sister Katherine emerges as another standout character, fiercely compassionate yet frustratingly elusive. Even Naomi Baptiste remains fascinating because of how mysterious and emotionally guarded she is. Every interaction feels loaded with hidden meaning.

The pacing is rewarding, with each chapter revealing another layer of the conspiracy surrounding missing children and underground networks. Daigle’s prose captures both the grit of urban decay and the emotional vulnerability of people trying to survive within it.

Readers who enjoy intelligent mysteries with strong emotional resonance and morally complex characters will find Nagler’s Secret an enjoyable read.

Seed of Power

𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸: Seed of Power 📚
𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿: R. Peter Ubtrent ✍️
.
.

Seed of Power, the second installment in the Dark Pilgrim series expands its universe with gripping intensity, political intrigue, and emotional depth. Picking up after the escape from the brutal penal colony of K’ar Krack’a, the novel follows Ailanthus, Tethys, and their companions as they struggle to survive in a galaxy that proves no less dangerous than the prison they left behind.

The richly layered world-building in this book is impressive. Ubtrent paints a harsh dystopian future where corruption, greed, and betrayal dominate nearly every corner of society. The tension between the Church of the Blessed Prophets and the weakening Imperium creates a fascinating political backdrop, while conflicts between alien races and power-hungry individuals add further complexity to the story.

Familiar characters evolve naturally as they face difficult choices, and new additions to the cast bring fresh perspectives to the narrative. Despite the darkness that permeates the novel, moments of loyalty, bravery, and honesty shine brightly, giving the story heart and humanity.

Seed of Power leaves readers eager to continue the journey into the next chapter of this captivating series. The book is well paced and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Bestiary of Blood

𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸: Bestiary of Blood 📚
.
.

Nzondi’s The Devil’s Blood, featured in the anthology Bestiary of Blood, is a horror fable that blends philosophy, folklore, and dark fantasy into a surprisingly emotional story. The tale builds its horror through atmosphere and unsettling ideas about fear, evil, and humanity’s obsession with the concept of the devil. The story follows a curious mother mosquito on a strange journey through the animal kingdom as she searches for answers about the existence of evil.

One of the strongest aspects of the story is the way Nzondi uses animals to explore human beliefs. The owl, coyote, and hyenas each provide different perspectives on morality, religion, and nature, turning simple conversations into thought-provoking reflections on good and evil. The dialogue feels theatrical at times, almost like a dark bedtime fable, which gives the story a unique voice that lingers long after reading.

Nzondi succeeds in creating a story that is unsettling not because of monsters hiding in shadows, but because of the uncomfortable truths hidden within fear, faith, and human nature itself. The Devil’s Blood is a short story that rewards thoughtful readers with layers of meaning. This story kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page.
