“Raising Jess: A Story of Hope” is a memoir written by Vickie Rubin. At the age of 24, Vickie had chicken pox and she was about to deliver her first child. Vickie gave birth to a daughter Jessica on April 11, 1982. Vickie’s father-in-law was sent to get the vaccine (for chicken pox) for Jess. When Jess was born, she weighed less than five pounds. Also, she had unusual facial features. Vickie felt that Jess was delayed. She went to Long Island, New York where a doctor confirmed that she has a small head and is delayed in every milestone.
During her journey of raising Jess, many people supported Vickie. Grandma Rose’s kindness has touched my heart. Vickie’s friend Barbara also supported her emotionally and physically. Her husband Mitch also did a great job as a partner.
I really appreciate Vickie’s strength for raising a child with complex medical issues. We all face hardships in life but we should hold our partner close like Mitch and Vickie did. This is a story of love, courage, family, care, parenting, etc. It’s an insightful read. I like to highly recommend this book to my fellow readers. This book kept me on the edge. I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. The writing style of the author is amazing. This is an inspiring story and I have learned a lot from Vickie through this book. If you love reading memoirs then go ahead with this book for sure.
