“The Canary Journal: A Novel” by Karah Khalia is a captivating read centered around Jolie Tanique Cade, a Black woman who has spent the last eleven years working at Amoeba Music. She shares a bungalow with her mother, Isabel, who has always been a protective presence in her life. Despite this, Jolie often feels that her mother is the only person she has at home. Isabel wants Jolie to land a high-paying job so she can start building an investment portfolio.

One evening, after visiting the Central Library, Jolie accidentally leaves her journal behind. A man named Hassan later texts her saying he found it. She asks him to return it in person. However, during their date, she’s put off by the fact that he repeatedly invites her to his apartment. Will Jolie find another man to date?

To find out what happens next in Jolieโ€™s journey, youโ€™ll have to read the book. Karah Khaliaโ€™s writing is clear and engaging, and the title fits perfectly. I especially loved the way journal entries are woven into the storyโ€”it made the reading experience all the more enjoyable.
