“THE SMALL PLATE WITH THE WRONG BACON: MISPRONOUNCING TRANSLATIONS” penned by the author Steven Lodge is a unique read. In this book, the author transforms English words or phrases by translating them into an uncommon language, resulting in strange and delightful new expressions.

‘The grass is greener on the other side’ is translated into ‘The vampire diaries are always popular’. Another example is from the small talk phrase. ‘What is the weather like today?’ is translated to ‘You are dead, just so you know.’

The translated phrases are unique and made me laugh. If you are looking for some weirdness, fun, translated phrases, something different from the usual then this book would be the perfect pick by you.

The author has also given funny, weird versions to get well soon cards, retirement cards, wedding cards, etc. It’s the most unique book I have read. I loved the illustrations as they made me enjoy this book more. I like to recommend this book to adult readers. They will be glad to read something unusual in their monotonous routine life.

A touching moment unfolds when Elaine shares her father’s reaction to her birth. Her mother thought it would be a boy. Her father was captivated by her angelic face, forming an unbreakable bond with his daughter.

Elaine candidly refers to menstruation as the “monthly monster,” a term many can relate to. She shares her experience of beginning this phase of life at the age of eleven.

In one poignant poem, Elaine reflects on losing her father. Though his departure came too soon, she finds solace in knowing he passed peacefully—a small comfort in her grief.

The poems beautifully capture significant milestones and emotions, making it easy for readers to connect with her experiences. The writing is simple yet impactful, offering both solace and relatability. I read this collection over a quiet weekend and found it to be a comforting companion. I’m eager to explore more of Elaine’s work in the future.
