“Tonio and Bear’s Adventures: Day at the Zoo” written by the author Hilda Torres is an interesting Children’s book. The story features a little boy named Tonio and his friend Bear. The two of them go on all sorts of adventures together. Tonio is on the autism spectrum but Bear helps him.

In this story, we see Tonio and Bear standing at the entrance of the zoo. Tonio loves animals but he doesn’t feel comfortable in the presence of so many people. He doesn’t like to be touched. Read this story to know how Bear will comfort Tonio. What advice will the Bear give to make Tonio feel easy?

Tonio and Bear take the readers on a rollercoaster ride full of adventures in this book. Through this book, the readers could understand the world better from the viewpoint of an autistic child. I am glad to read this book as it gave me insights about how sound, light, touch can affect an autistic child and therefore we should try to make them comfortable. I loved the companionship of Tonio and Bear. It would be interesting to read more of their adventures.

🚀 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:
“The Hidden Crown” written by the author K.E. Blair is the first installment in The Return of Magic book series. The main character of the story is a servant named Anslee. She is in a magic-less kingdom where her every move is controlled by the chef Magda. Anslee isn’t happy as Magda gives her the task to cut root vegetables for hours every Sunday.

Anslee is young. She loves buying ribbons and is always on a lookout for a good suitor. She feels lucky when Magda takes her for vegetable shopping. She uses this opportunity to search for a suitor for her. When she was window shopping at the Madam’s Dressing Gown, she met a mage named Lord Avery Varrock. Anslee is afraid of mages as they can be dangerous. Why has Lord Avery sent a purple gown to Anslee?

Read this story to find out what happens next. The story is written well by the author. The characters are well developed. Anslee’s character is my most favorite. The world building is impressive. This book is a perfect escape from the real world for a few hours. Add this to your tbr without any second thoughts.

🚀 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:
“Better Off Here” written by the author Melissa R. Mendelson is a collection of dystopian short stories.

November Snow is a story that kept me on the edge of my seat. The story features a man in an extra-large gray hoodie. He was waiting for the bus. Once during Thanksgiving, his niece caught a snowflake on her tongue. She was the first family member to go because of the incurable disease. The man hopes to have a cure of this disease one day.

“The Quiet Room” is another interesting story in which the souls are brought and kept. The narrator works here as a staffer by looking at the paperwork. He isn’t supposed to ask any questions. Will the narrator be safe there?

These stories are interesting and spooky at the same time. The stories are unique. One could read a couple of stories in a single sitting. The language used in the book is easy to follow. The author’s narration is smooth. The title of the book is suitable for its content. I had a great time reading this book. I am definitely interested in exploring more books by the author.

Interview with author Laurence Baillie Brown

Q1. Hello, can you please introduce yourself? Readers would love to know more about you.

I’m Laurence, now in my sixties, born in Hull in the North of England, and – key facts – I’m both Jewish and gay, 2 attributes that don’t always sit easily together! I spent nearly 40 years teaching English Law, but my great passions have always been writing (both fiction and poetry) and music (especially playing classical piano.) In the 80s and 90s I was very active writing for the gay press in London (where I have lived for many years.) I published my first novel ‘Addictions’ back in 2000 (Gay Men’s Press.) I’ve had two 10-year relationships with male partners in my life, but now I’m happily single.

Q2. What were the key challenges you faced while writing your book “At the Court of Broken Dreams”?

I’ve been fascinated by history – and historical novels – since I was a child, but my focus was always the Tudors and Stuarts (and the ancient Greeks!). When the skeleton of Richard III was discovered – mysteriously – under a Leicester car-park, I became intrigued by the story and by the King’s hotly disputed character. At the same time I remembered the De-la-Poles – Hull’s most famous medieval family – who rose from local vintners to Royal Dukes in just 3 generations. I also wanted to write a story about a love – romantic love – between men, in a historical period when there was no concept of being ‘gay’ or even ‘homosexual’. For these reasons I have deliberately left open the issue as to whether the two ‘bromances’ my narrator Eddie has in the book are sexually realized – because in the end that’s not the most important thing. The biggest challenges were: to research the Wars of the Roses period (which took about 3 years); to use language – including some medieval English – which would not sound anachronistic; and, most important, to wear all this lightly and write a readable and I hope gripping – and moving – story.

Q3. What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

In writing this book I fell back on my favourite historical novelists: Robert Graves (‘I, Claudius’); Gore Vidal (the brilliant ‘Narratives of Empire’ series); and the spell-binding but largely forgotten Mary Renault, who wrote wonderful novels set in classical Greece (e.g. ‘The Bull from the Sea’). I also adore England’s 2 greatest novelists: Jane Austen (‘Persuasion’ etc) and George Eliot (the brilliant ‘Daniel Deronda’ which deserves constant re-reading.) I wouldn’t presume to say they have influenced me.

Q4. What’s your favourite spot to visit in your own country? And what makes it so special to you?

This is difficult to answer, as I’m much more historically than geographically inclined. Hull is still important to me, but mainly in my imagination. My favourite English city is probably Brighton, a colourful, historic resort on the south coast, which has the sea (I miss that), the fantastical Royal Pavilion (built by the Prince Regent) – and a brilliant gay life!

Q5. What inspired you to write the book ‘At the Court of Broken Dreams’?

Trying not to repeat myself, it was the confluence of my passion for historical fiction, the extraordinary discovery of King Richard III’s bones, my fascination with the fifteenth century (important to me because that was when my alma mater King’s College, Cambridge was founded by the tragic King Henry VI, who also appears in the book), my desire to write a ‘real’ love story between men, and, I should add, my fascination with the ambivalent status of the Jewish faith and community in the late Middle Ages.

Q6. How long did it take you to write your book ‘At the Court of Broken Dreams’?

As I remember, about 3 years for the research, followed by about one year’s writing. At that point – half way through the story – I had some sort of mental and physical breakdown, which unsurprisingly held things up for about 3 years! Then, as a part of my recovery, I began reading – and writing. It took about another year to complete and revise the novel. I finished it in the Spring of 2022 and, having had some bad experiences with publishers, decided to publish independently. Which is brilliant in terms of choosing one’s own cover-art etc but is also deeply frustrating e.g. the mainstream press clearly believe all independently published novels are crap as they won’t even look at one before refusing to review it. Talk about narrow-minded. As a result of that, I would prefer to have a major publisher for my next novel…if I write one!

Q7. On what platforms can readers buy your books?

My novels – there are now 3 out there – are all available from Amazon, Waterstones, Barnes and Noble and quite a range of independent bookshops (which delights me.)

Q8. Tell us about the process of coming up with the book cover and the title ‘At the Court of Broken Dreams’?

I simply don’t know where the title came from, but I had it from the first concept and it never changed. It also has a ‘sub-title’: ‘Love and War in the Middle Ages’ which is probably more informative.
The covers are a combination of key images in the story, which I chose: the male torso with Hebrew text ‘written on the body’ (it reads ‘Let there be light’); the harp, which is Eddie’s instrument; his ruby ring; and at the top, the authentic coat of arms of the Earls of Suffolk, Eddie’s ancestors.

Q9. When writing a book how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

In writing this book I can assure you I had no need to keep it fresh as I was totally driven, from beginning to end. I was utterly fascinated by the characters, who, after a while, began to tell their own stories.

Q10. What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

On writing historical fiction, I was given the excellent advice not to wait to start writing until you’ve finished your research – because you never will.
On writing generally: I think it’s from ‘Aspects of the novel ‘ by the wonderful E.M. Forster (‘Passage to India’) who said something like: say just what you want to say, as clearly as possible, then stop. And also that the most important quality in any novel is the “and then…and then” quality. The man was a genius. Sadly he died just about a year before I went up to King’s College Cambridge, where he had been a life Fellow.

Shooting Stars penned by the author Skye Bothma is a book that fits my reading taste perfectly. Catherine Marshall and Jake Donovan are the main characters of the story. Catherine is a receptionist and is not a big fan of her job. She was in a long-term relationship with David. They had a plan to go to Hawaii together. When Catherine found that David had betrayed her by getting involved with another woman, they had a breakup.

With a broken heart, Catherine took the trip to Hawaii alone. A renowned actor, Jake Donovan needed an escape after work. He also visited Hawaii. There, he met Catherine. As love starts to spark between them, will it last longer?

Read this story to find out if they are meant to be together or their paths crossed for some purpose. The characters of both Jake and Catherine are my favorite from the book. I could relate myself to the character of Catherine a lot. As someone with self-doubt and being afraid to pursue my dreams, I could totally feel Catherine’s character. The story is well paced and I enjoyed every bit of this book. This story inspired me to visit Hawaii soon.

The author has done great work in her debut novel. Those who enjoy contemporary romance should definitely get their hands on this book.

“A Guiding Light: Navigating abuse, alcoholism, addiction and love” written by the author Dale Preston is a great autobiography. In this book, the author has mentioned about sex, drugs, alcohol, love, abuse, loss, etc.

Dale was introduced to smoking marijuana when he was seven years old. In his formative years, his parents separated. At the same time, Dale was abused physically and sexually. He developed a smoking habit as a result. Things got uglier when Dale’s mother had an extramarital affair. During a fight between his mother and father, Dale’s mother used him as a shield as his dad wouldn’t harm him.

The author’s world turned upside down when his father passed away. When Dale consumed too much Cannabinol, his mother stepped over him and walked away. This made him feel his mother’s emotional detachment towards him. Read this book to know how Dale found recovery.

I appreciate the author for sharing his journey with us. This book gives hope and inspiration to readers that they can turn their life around. The cover photo of the book is nice. The writing style of the author is easy to follow. It’s great to see how the author is taking out time to help others. I am glad to read Dale’s journey. I strongly recommend it to my fellow readers.

The Reflex written by the author Maria Denison is the first book in The Reflex Book Series. The main character of the story is Cara. She is married to a handsome husband Nic. Cara and Nic are the parents of a teenager: Max and Mia. They are twins. Dealing with two teenagers seems like a lot of work to Cara. Jinx is Cara’s friend. They were roommates in Washington, DC for ten years. After Jinx, Cara came to Cleveland.

Cara’s best friend Connor Mitchell Reed is the Director of the CIA. He knows Cara more than Nic. While working at the agency, Cara was misunderstood by many colleagues. They used to think that Cara gets favors from Reed and she sleeps with him. Nic doesn’t like Reed to be around Cara but over the years, he has accepted the fact that he is Cara’s best friend and would stay in her life. Read this story to know about Cara’s work as a spy.

The twists and turns in the story made it an interesting read. The characters are written by the author well. I was amazed how Cara’s character picked up from being a wife, mother to being a spy. The writing style of the author is nice and the title is suitable. Looking forward to reading the second book in the series.
