“The Last Dance: And a Loving Mother” by Stephen Raymond Manning is a compelling and heartfelt memoir. It tells the story of Stephen’s journey to finding a life partner and how his wife, Mary Ann, became a devoted mother.

The narrative begins with Stephen moving to Chicago for his career, where he meets Mary Ann. Before leaving for Chicago, his mother advised him wisely, saying, โ€œThe woman you date should be someone you want to raise your children.โ€ Guided by this advice, Stephen introduced Mary Ann to his family, and after gaining the blessing of both families, they tied the knot.

However, their journey wasnโ€™t without challenges. Mary Annโ€™s medical history raised uncertainties about her ability to become a mother. Despite this, Stephen remained steadfast in his commitment to her. With faith and perseverance, they were eventually blessed with the family they had dreamed of.

This memoir is a testament to love, resilience, and hope. The book is beautifully written, with a straightforward and engaging style that keeps readers hooked from start to finish. The cover design is eye-catching, and the pacing of the story maintains a sense of curiosity about what comes next. Itโ€™s a must-read for anyone looking for an inspiring and emotional story.

“Give Me Mercy” by C.B. O’Malley is a compelling and emotional journey. The protagonist, Mercy, is a 30-year-old woman grappling with the aftermath of a failed marriage, which ended partly because she couldnโ€™t fulfill her ex-husband’s desire for a family. Haunted by feelings of inadequacy, Mercy struggles to silence the relentless voice in her head that insists sheโ€™s not enough.

Thankfully, Mercy has two close friends, Tess and Henry, who provide her with support. Tess, determined to see Mercy happy, takes on the role of matchmaker. But when Henry announces he and Tess are going on a date, Mercy feels like an outsider in her own circle. Overwhelmed, she begins to see herself as a burden, with her inner critic growing louder and more ruthless.

Things take a surprising turn when Mercy comes to consciousness and sees Aiden and Orthus around. Though itโ€™s not an abduction, the encounter pushes her to confront her deepest fears. Can Mercy open up to Aiden about her struggles? And what happens when she finally decides to choose herself over her doubts?

This thought-provoking novel sheds light on the destructive power of negative self-talk and the importance of self-acceptance. The authorโ€™s writing is engaging and accessible, making it easy to connect with Mercyโ€™s journey. I especially admired the depth of Mercyโ€™s character and found her story both relatable and inspiring. If youโ€™re looking for a book that explores resilience and self-discovery, this one is a must-read.

“The Mage’s War,” the first installment of The Storja Chronicles by A.J. Wardens is a captivating fantasy tale that immerses readers in the life of Liora, a young heroine forced to grow up far too quickly. At just nine years old, Liora became the caregiver for her family after her parents were exiledโ€”a role she assumed out of necessity, not choice.

Determined to protect her people, Liora secretly trains in forbidden battle magic, preparing for the inevitable war. When the Kovenent army threatens their survival, the stakes are raised even higher. Cogan, a close ally, reminds Liora that fleeing is not an optionโ€”they cannot abandon Iska, their homeland, or the legacy it represents. The army’s true target is revealed to be the Heart of Aether, a powerful artifact hidden in Eciuj City by Liora’s parents and Cogan to safeguard their world.

As the Kovenent army closes in, Liora must decide if she has the courage to fight back and use her magic to defend her people. Will she rise to the challenge, or will Iska fall into ruin?

A.J. Wardens has masterfully crafted a vivid and enthralling world, blending high stakes with rich, descriptive storytelling. This is a story that grips you from the first page and doesn’t let go, making it easy to lose yourself in its spellbinding narrative. If you’re a fan of fantasy filled with heart, courage, and magic, The Mage’s War is a must-read.

When Karen returned to her childhood village for a research project, she reconnected with old classmates. Through conversations with Jill, she learned how Jill’s mother dismissed her claims about the Teacherโ€™s misconduct. Another student, Cathy Spry, experienced abuse and her family reported it but the authorities failed to act.

The villageโ€™s silence perpetuated the harm. Karen was deeply troubled to realize that, despite knowing she had been abused, her mother still sent her and her sister back to the same school under the same predatorโ€™s watch. Tragically, her mother passed away before Karen could confront her about these decisions. Years later, she discovered that her sister Bonnie had also been a victim of the Teacher.

This memoir is a heart-wrenching account that sheds light on the importance of awareness and action. It underscores the need for parents to educate their children about personal safety and boundaries. It also highlights the critical role of justice systems in holding perpetrators accountable. Karenโ€™s story raises a poignant question: why did the community and parents remain silent? This book takes readers on an emotional journey, urging us to protect our children and ensure their safety through vigilance, education, and advocacy.

If youโ€™re looking for an inspiring memoir, โ€œSpread the word I’m making it Happenโ€ by Shelly Castle is a compelling choice. In this deeply personal narrative, Shelly reflects on her childhood and the connections she shared with her family. Her relationship with her elder sister, Angela, is beautifully depictedโ€”a bond as comforting as stepping into sunlight on a chilly day. Angela’s presence added a spark of brightness to her life.

One of Shelly’s observations particularly resonated with me: โ€œItโ€™s funny how family dynamics work sometimesโ€”the youngest often gets the most, without having to give much in return.โ€ Her journey wasnโ€™t without struggles, though. From facing challenges within her family home to making the tough decision to move out with her son, Shelly’s story is one of resilience and determination.

What stands out most is her powerful vision of creating a legacy that extends far beyond herself. Shelly’s unwavering drive to overcome obstacles and chase her dreams is truly motivating, encouraging readers to aim high and persist despite difficulties.

This memoir is a heartfelt and thought-provoking read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories of perseverance and self-discovery. Shelly Castleโ€™s work is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and Iโ€™m grateful for the opportunity to have read her story.

“Trusting God Beyond Limits: How to Navigate Through Uncertainties” by Juliana Gardiner is an insightful and inspiring read. The author encourages readers to place their trust in God, emphasizing that, regardless of how long it takes, Godโ€™s plan will always unfold in due time.

In moments of frustration, doubt, or confusion, Gardiner reminds us that we can find peace and strength by turning to God. She delves into what true trust in God entailsโ€”letting go of our own desires and embracing His guidance. The book explores the painful yet transformative nature of trust, highlighting that even when we feel defeated, there is always hope on the horizon.

Gardiner emphasizes the importance of allowing pain to teach us valuable lessons. Through suffering, God shapes us and prepares us for what lies ahead. She shares her personal experience, where despite numerous prayers, God seems silent. However, it became clear to her that these moments of waiting were part of a larger purpose to equip her for the future.

I found myself on the edge of losing hope in my faith, but this book has rekindled my belief. Many parts of it resonated deeply with me. The authorโ€™s message to persevere, even when the answers seem delayed, is both reassuring and motivating. This book is truly a gift, and Iโ€™m thankful to the author for sharing her journey of faith.

Interview with author Karen Lee

Q1. Hello, can you please introduce yourself? Readers would love to know more about you.

A1. My name is Karen Lee and I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Iโ€™m a retired clinical psychologist and management consultant who now writes, and teaches memoir. I just had my third book published, The Village That Betrayed its Children.

I have lived in Canada, England and Hawaii and have travelled the world for work and to live. I believe that travel is essential to keep oneโ€™s perspective.

Q2. What were the key challenges you faced while writing your book “The Village that Betrayed its Childrenโ€

A2. The incidents that are in my book mainly happened in the 1950s and 60s. Also, they didnโ€™t just happen to me, but to all the children in the two-room country school over a period of about eleven years. Our teacher/principal was a pedophile โ€“ that is, he was sexually attracted to, and molested girls under the age of twelve. So, most of the girls in the school were molested.

This is a topic many people donโ€™t want to discuss and, indeed, even now, over fifty years later, some people still wouldnโ€™t discuss what had happened in our school and village. But I managed to interview thirty people who talked freely about their experiences.

Also, because so much time had elapsed, peopleโ€™s memories could be unreliable, so it was good that I had so many testimonies.

Physically this book was difficult because I now live twenty-four hundred miles from my home village. I had to interview people by flying back, connecting on Zoom, phoning and emailing, and had to locate people via word of mouth and Facebook.

Q3. What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

A3. Memoir books in general. I love Tristine Rainerโ€™s book, Your Life as Story, and have read many memoirs. I also love to research and did some in order to write this book. I researched pedophilia, and also denial to see why people donโ€™t report or do anything about pedophiles.

Q4. Whatโ€™s your favourite spot to visit in your own country? And what makes it so special to you?

A4. I still love the small villages in the area I grew up in, in Southern Ontario. Iโ€™m comfortable there, it is familiar. But I also love the west coast of British Columbia.

Q5. What inspired you to write the book ‘The Village that Betrayed its Children’?

A5. While I was writing my first memoir, The Full Catastrophe, about domestic violence in my two marriages, I realized that my early childhood experiences in my village two-room school were formative. Because I couldnโ€™t escape my school, where the teacher was a pedophile, I went into denial and that had a huge effect on my choices in life. Through therapy, I have learned not to shut down so much and now am happily married.

Q6. How long did it take you to write your book ‘The Village that Betrayed its Children’?

A6. From start to publication, about five and a half years.

Q7. On what platforms can readers buy your books?

A7. Mainly Amazon.com or .ca but also on my publisherโ€™s website, AOS Publishers, Montreal

Q8. Tell us about the process of coming up with the book cover and the title ‘The Village that Betrayed its Children’?

A8. The cover of my book shows the setting and the issue โ€“ there is an illustration of a small country school, two young girls skipping rope, and a male teacher standing in the shadows beside the school. Many have said it really does represent the issue of our teacher.
The title I first thought of was โ€œPermission to Molestโ€ because I felt that the village in some ways gave this teacher โ€œpermission to molestโ€ because they knew what he was doing, but didnโ€™t get him fired. My publisher thought that was too provocative so we changed it to โ€œThe Village That Betrayed its Childrenโ€ which accurately says what happened.

Q9. When writing a book how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

A9. I only write things that are of importance to me โ€“ not for the commercial value but the human value. I write very carefully and love paying attention to my words, sentences and grammar. I love the process of writing, especially when I am writing something of social import.

A friend calls me โ€œKaren the Revealerโ€ and I like to think that I uncover things of importance to society in general.

Q10. What is the most valuable piece of advice youโ€™ve been given about writing?

A10. The old adage โ€œshow, donโ€™t tellโ€ is absolutely essential. Give lots of detail to help the reader immerse themselves in the action or thoughts of the story.

Also, keep things simple. Donโ€™t indulge in flowery language, tell it like it is.

Pay attention to the words you use โ€“ no adverbs, no repetitions of important words.

The Protectors by Frank Victoria is a gripping paranormal fantasy that plunges readers into a world of danger, loyalty, and moral dilemmas. The story revolves around a secretive group called The Protectors, led by Troy, a werewolf with a unique code: he hunts down criminals who harm innocent humans.

The plot thickens with the introduction of Carlo Maggio, a brilliant biologist who once worked tirelessly to create a cure for Lycanthropyโ€”commonly known as werewolfism. Now, Barbara Lane, a determined scientist, has taken up his mission, hoping to find the elusive remedy.

In a strategic move, the police orchestrate decoy scenarios to lure out werewolves. When Troy rushes to save a supposed victim, heโ€™s tranquilized and captured. What follows is a thrilling sequence of events that keeps readers questioning: can The Protectors continue their mission, or will their secret world unravel?

This book captivated me from start to finish. Troyโ€™s character is especially compelling, showcasing strength, vulnerability, and a sense of justice. The pacing is excellent, and the storyline brims with suspense and intrigue. The cover design complements the bookโ€™s theme perfectly. If you enjoy tales of werewolves and the paranormal, The Protectors is a must-read.

“He Calls Me Redeemed: A Memoir of Childhood Sex Abuse, Heroin Addiction, Hope, and Redemption” penned by the author Arman Kaymakcian is an intriguing read. When Arman was a young boy, someone asked him, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” His answer was: he wanted to be a daddy. To Arman, his father’s eyes held both the memories of his past and the promise of his future. Following his parents’ divorce, Arman could only see his dad on weekends.ย

His motherโ€™s best friend, Aunt Danielle, was a significant figure in their life. However, she disapproved of Danielleโ€™s boyfriend, Rich. When after a concert visit, Arman stayed at Danielle’s house, he was sexually abused by Rich. The abuse went on for a long time after the first instance.

As a drug dealer, Arman always had dope. No one knew about his heroin habit. Things got ugly when Armanโ€™s mild manageable addiction became an intense obsession. He smoked heroin all day everyday and it consumed every part of him.

Arman kept the abuse a secret with him. He started binge eating and gained so much weight. Over the next two years, his appearance changed. Arman learned about pain, depression and how to cope with them.

The childhood sex-abuse made him angry, confused, lonely, self-destructive, etc. Read this book to discover how his journey shaped his path to manhood. Itโ€™s a powerful story of abuse, faith, trauma, recovery, healing and hope. This memoir took me on an emotional rollercoaster, and Iโ€™m deeply grateful to the author for sharing such a personal experience. Itโ€™s a reminder that even in our darkest moments, thereโ€™s always light, and God never abandons us. Iโ€™m truly glad I had the chance to read this book.
