Interview with author Dawn M. Blair

Book: Me And Mr. Monks

Q1.  Hello, can you please introduce yourself? Readers would love to know more about you. 

My name is Dawn M. Blair and I’m a Registered Nurse Case Manager with Hospice of Virginia. I have been a registered nurse for 10 years and a hospice nurse for 3 years. I am also a new author. 

Q2.  What were the key challenges you faced while writing ‘Me and Mr. Monks’ book?

Finding the time to write was the biggest challenge as I have a full-time job. I made though and was pretty surprised at how efficient I became when writing this book. I guess when you really want something, you find the time. 

Q3. What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

I can’t really think of a whole lot of them right off but I’d have to say Jim Gorant who wrote “The Lost Dogs” a book about the rescue and rehab of the Michael Vick fighting ring dogs and Larry Levin who wrote “Oogy” also a story about a rescue dog. My favorite poet is Maya Angelou. 

Q4. What’s your favorite spot to visit in your own country? And what makes it so special to you?

Definitely the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It’s such a beautiful and peaceful place plus I love the ocean. It’s now even more special because Mr. Monks and I used to make yearly to OBX. I cherish those memories. 

Q5. Is there lots to do before you drive in and start writing a book? 

There really isn’t for me. I have an idea about a story, usually a true story and then I come up with a plan and start writing. 

Q6. How long did it take you to write ‘Me and Mr. Monks’ book?

The book took me 6 months to complete.

Q8. Tell us about the process of coming up with the book cover and the title ‘Me and Mr. Monks’?

The title is pretty simple, it’s a story about me and my little 7lb rescue dog Mr. Monks. Hence the title “Me and Mr. Monks”.

The book cover was designed by my brother who is a graphics artist in Chicago, Illinois. He is a partner in a firm called Illumia Agency. 

Q9. When writing a book how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I write straight from the heart. I love writing true stories and stories that readers can easily relate to. 

Q10. Are there any secrets from the book (that aren’t in the blurb), you can share with your readers?

There are a few secrets but I’ll let readers find out for themselves as to what those are.

The main character of the story is Jacob Richardson. He has strong sex urges. He could go to any extent to fulfill them. Kim was the prettiest girl on the cheerleading team. Soon, Jacob and Kim started dating and had sex. Kim is now a supportive wife to Jacob. Jacob was left a huge fortune by his parents. He spent some of the money to make Kim’s and his life comfortable but he also spent the money to fulfill his sex addiction.

Grab a copy of this book to read all about Jacob’s sex adventures with different women. I was surprised to know about his goal to have sex with 20000 women. Get to know by reading this story will he reach his goal or something will stop him?

It is an insightful and engaging read. I gained so much knowledge from the character of Jacob. The author has caught my attention and made me forget the real world around me for a while. The characters are written nicely. This book is for adult readers only.

I love reading magical fantasy stories. Recently I got my hands on the book “A Witch is Born: The Adventures of Cassandra Rho”.

The story features two twins Cassandra Rho and her sister Kessi. After the death of their first mother Unis, Cassandra became more introverted. They were at the orphanage of Lord Ronnis D’Breeth. Lord Ronnis assigned a new surrogate mother Sera to them. Cassandra guarded herself against her new mother but Sera was very patient with Cassandra.

One day Lord Ronnis noticed that Cassandra’s drawing is of dark witchcraft and has arcane symbols. As the story progresses, Cassandra continues practicing sketches and discovering the delights of arcane magic. Only her sister Kessi was aware of that. Grab a copy of this book to know why Cassandra and Kessi decided to leave the orphanage one day. Will Cassandra be able to use her powers to save her people?

This is an intriguing story that hooked me till the last page. The storyline is interesting. The author has very well written the characters of the story. Cassandra is my favorite character. The cover photo of the book looks lovely and the title is suitable.

Hit and Run penned by the author Maddie Reign is an intriguing story. The main character of the story is Alexi Petrov Chandler. Alexi has the image of being a Playboy. He was made the CEO in his father’s company but still he wasn’t allowed to make any decisions. Alexi left the position and his mother supported him with the idea of opening Petrov’s resort.

When Alexi was planning for the launch, his ex Tammy came to threaten him that she will go to press if he doesn’t take her back. Now, Alexi’s mother has advised him to clear his playboy image by finding a girl and getting married. He met Anya, a Russian model. Anya will get a green card and financial support from the marriage. So, both Alexi and Anya agreed to the marriage deal for their own benefits.

Read this story to find out will everything go smoothly as per plan or is there any twist? I loved the plot of this story. The writing style of the author is nice. I enjoyed every bit of this story. Characters are written well by the author. Looking forward to reading the next part.

“To Hook A Star” penned by the author Patsi Harvey is an intriguing read. The main character of the story is a 33 years old single mother Kirsty Green. Her daughter Abi is twelve years old. Losing her husband Gary in an accident was the most horrifying event of Kirsty’s life.

Gary’s friend Danny is a Godfather to Abi. Danny is in love with Kirsty but the problem is for Kirsty, he is just a friend. One day when Kirsty was coming home from London, she shared a cab with a Hollywood star Dillon. They both felt for each other but didn’t express it. Now Kirsty is stalking Dillon on social media. Will they meet again?

The characters of the story are written well. The plot is nice. The cover photo and the title of the book is suitable according to the content. I loved the writing style of Patsi. I enjoyed every bit of this story. Really looking forward to reading more of Patsi’s work in the future.

As a kid, Christina was molested and was looking for love and acceptance. Our anger and lack of forgiveness makes us bitter. Only with self-acceptance and self-love, we can be free. Hilde Kramer didn’t excel at anything that matters. She was overjoyed to carry the child of a Nazi’s official.

Irma Binz wanted to start a new life after being cheated by her fiance Eduard. What will happen when she accepts the offer to work in Lebensborn Society maternity home?

This book totally gripped my attention in it thereby making me forget the current world around me. It’s hard to put down. The cover photo of the book looks nice. The language used in the book is lucid and I was able to follow it easily. I really appreciate the research Jennifer must have done in writing this book.

Q1. Hello, can you please introduce yourself? Readers would love to know more about you.

My name is Suzka. I am an artist, a painter and now an author. I look at things differently than most. I love everything irreverent, imaginative, delightfully manic and brimming with color. It is the other side in every scenario that interests me the most. So it goes without saying, my take on dementia is going to show that other side – the magical cockeyed world that exists a step outside reality. From the book, to a podcast to a movie in the mix, everything Dementialand™ in my new love.

Q2. What were the key challenges you faced while writing ‘Dementialand’ book?

The challenge came after I wrote the book. The word dementia, even the word ‘Dementialand’, ignited a fear and negative response to a subject no one wanted to talk about. Part of me understood. When my mother got dementia I searched all other for a book that was not depressing. I ended up writing the book I was looking for.
I loved living it, writing it and reading it… again and again.

Q3. What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

I love story’s that are written beautifully and character driven. Faulkner, Steinbeck, Salinger, Kurt Vonnegut, Lawrence Durrell, Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and everything Fellini. I sleep with the books of Picasso, Giacometti, Rauschenberg, DeKooning and Joyce Cary. We are all so close. I use words like they’re paint. Gully Jimson from Cary’s ‘The Horse’s Mouth’ is one of the strong visiting characters in Dementialand.

Q4. What’s your favorite spot to visit in your own country? And what makes it so special to you?

My favorite place is where I am and where I dream to be.

Q5. Is there lots to do before you dive in and start writing a book?

Play pool. Wash my kitchen floor. Cartwheels… whatever works at that moment.

Q6. How long did it take you to write ‘Wonders In Dementialand’ book?

Four years. I had cancer and was going through treatment. I was unable to paint or move around much. About all I could do was lift my iPad and write. For four years I walked to a coffee shop at the corner and wrote every morning from 7 am to noon. Some days I wrote only one sentence. It was the routine that saved me.

Q8. Tell us about the process of coming up with the book cover and the title ‘Wonders In Dementialand’

I am constantly creating images of Dementialand. The whimsical topsy-turvy persona appears on the cover and in my paintings as well as Dementialand’s storyline podcast on YouTube. Dementialand for me exists a step beyond reality. It’s an artists’s playground.

Q9. When writing a book how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

Movement keeps things fresh for me. From the book to a podcast to making a movie. The American Film Market selected Wonders In Dementialand to be pitched to producers at their book-to-movie session. It was Dementialand’s first introduction to the film industry and received an overwhelming response as well as a full movie producer contract. The script’s first draft was written, a trailer was in the works… then came the pandemic, Covid and the return of my cancer. Everything was canceled. I was devastated but not broken. The AFM experience made me realize the enormity of the subject and how important it is to tell this story.

Q10. Are there any secrets from the book (that aren’t in the blurb), you can share with your readers?

I loved living in Dementialand. There were no more expectations of who or what I was suppose to be. It was scary at first. My entire daughter-hood was colored by issues I had with my mother. It was who I am for God’s sake. My rebellious, my insecurities, my defensiveness was all part of my makeup. And if my mother cannot remember our issues, then who am I. Her memory loss was changing my identity not hers. Under that canvas I created, I saw someone I hardly knew. I believe Dementia was my mother’s last gift she gave to me.

Sheba’s husband TC was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. Sheba already lost a part of her when her best friend Sam died. When Sheba’s husband was hospitalized for the third time, she used all her vacation time to spend it with her husband. I appreciate the way TC told Sheba to live her life once he is gone.

Sheba has mentioned about the power of prayers to God in this book. In her life, God is there to meet even insignificant needs for her. I agree on this as I have experienced God’s Grace myself. Read this story to be a person of Grace and Grit.

This book has opened my eyes to do all the things I want to without delay because tomorrow isn’t promised. Also, it has inspired me to build resilience. Another important lesson I learnt is that when people abandon us for no reason, we shouldn’t become angry or bitter. Sheba has written this book very well. One could take away so many lessons from this book. Narration is smooth and strong. It’s a book worth reading. So, go for it without any second thoughts.
